Budget VPS - KVM or OVZ 7
Hello,
I am looking for a good budget vps preferably US IP, other IPs will also work if the service is good. I will just host my portfolio site and couple of small blogs. Occasionally I will host my clients app or site temporarily just to show the functionality which will require docker if its OVZ.
The current provider is very good but they dont have any US ips and they are discontinuing all the old packages after this billing circle. So I would have to move anyway so I decided to try a different provider.
Current vps: https://imgur.com/fLeOzXm
Paying: 43 USD annually
My Requirement
Budget: 45-60 USD annually
RAM: 1 GB+ more the better.
Storage: 25GB+
Location: Preferred US.
Preferably KVM or OVZ with docker support.
Thanks
Edit: listed my requirements
Comments
Vultr, Digitalocean, Linode, BuyVM, Ramnode, Virmach.
Well my friend, there are lots really
But maybe you can start off by checking out the providers listed by @creep
We currently have 4 locations in US.
What specs do you need and what is your expected budget?
I did check couple of those. Most small ones are out of stock. The cloud ones have only 512MB RAM, which are within my budget, I need around 1 GB or more. Most times the VPS will just sit and do nothing so I dont want to spend too much.
Like @HostDoc has mentioned, list out your requirements and your budget so providers can offer you should they have anything that might fit your search.
I can recommend WisHosting @exception0x876 . I have used them previously for about 6 months and the servers are rock solid with excellent up/down speeds.
Here's the specs:
KVM SSD US (Starting at$4.99)
WisHosting gives a discount if you pay every three months (no annual option). For this KVM box, you pay $12.99 for three months, so your annual cost is approximately $52, which is within your budget.
I would say this is an excellent option given that it is KVM (definitely better than OVZ7) and is very close to your current box in terms of specs, except that you are getting double SSD disk space and double bandwith (his boxes have blazing fast bandwidth I assure you), and you are NOT getting oversold nodes.
Here's the link to his VPS page: https://www.wishosting.com/order/main/packages/VPS/?group_id=2. Just remember to pay quarterly to get the discount if you choose to get your box from @exception0x876
InceptionHosting (@AnthonySmith
) has some nice deals for OVZ7 (supporting docker) in Phoenix Arizona - just until the end of Octoberhttps://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/160521/virtuozzo-7-docker-ready-50-off-double-disk-up-to-6gb-ram-from-24-p-year-phoenix-usa/p1
so that might be a good baseline to compare to other suggestions
I'm going to assume you want 2 GB ram but are okay with single vcore and HDD
right now @HostDoc may have some of the best prices for good quality KVM in the US - if the "early bird special" offers from this recent thread are still available:
https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/160734/kvm-vps-from-10-y-nvme-hdd-ssd-new-location-launch/p1
(I got the £3.49/m NVMe in Los Angeles - with paypal fees that came out to $4.61 for me, still a great deal for some very capable hardware)
... if that's more than you need, there are still some good options for maybe a little bit less.
I think @VirMach is generally a good choice for webservers that don't need extreme CPU - they are stable and affordable. Check their recent-ish offer thread here https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/160362/virmach-raid-10-ssd-from-7-yr-kvm-23-yr-2gb-windows-ddos-protection-10gbps-available/p1 and see if any of the $3.50/m (KVM with 2 GB ram / 1 vcore / 30 GB SSD) deals are still in stock in Buffalo, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Seattle. Otherwise might just wait a few weeks until Black Friday (look for their flash sale thread).
Some more deals between $4 and approximately $6 per month:
) offers a KVM with 2 gb ram, 1 vcore, and 20 GB SSD for about $4/m in Phoenix Arizona -> https://www.wishosting.com/order/main/packages/VPS/?group_id=2And a few more recommendations for stable providers with US locations for you to follow up on (they're all active on the forum so just search for their offer threads and see if they might have something suitable for you)
)))I'm leaving out quite a few more that have good offers but probably more than what you need. If you increase your budget to $7/m then would also suggest taking a look at BuyVM, DrServer, IntoVPS, RamNode, and (when on sale) ExtraVM, and Lunanode (in Canada but worth hopping a border for!)
EDIT2: also @AnyNode has affordable OVZ plans
EDIT3: and the @leapswitch "cloudjiffy" service could be a cost-effective "pay for what you use" scalable solution for you (OVZ based - I believe they support Docker)
@uptime Wow. You really have the time to write! I just went with one that I think is the best value for his needs and I log in to see a thesis.
You've been uptimed
ultravps.eu has good yearly plan around USD40 without VAT in the LA. 2 x vCPU, 2GB ram and 10+50GB SSD (by template, or merge both volumes in a single 60GB by ISO install). nice and stable, CPU is adequate but not too energetic. Quadranet LA was good. comes with IPv6 as well.

virmach's recent special offers is even lower for annual. USD $30 got me a 3GB VPS. downside is that their CPU is on the low side. however testing so far is really nice and stable. would say its another value for money. ColoCrossing premium bandwidth is nice. 1 x good IPv4.
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/14862163
letbox still has a sale on their 2x2GBx20GB bbox + 512GB storage. USD 50 yearly. best connectivity all round so far since they upgraded to 10gbps (VPS is still 1gbps) and A+B power feed. Best CPU power. Loving it. Maxes out 1gbit without breaking a sweat. Psychz LA is psyched.

That LetBox thing is a good deal if OP knows how to configure the stuff that takes up lots of disk space to be accessed from the block storage. He can even put a Nextcloud on it and have the box serve as a personal cloud in addition to his portfolio website and blogs.
I need to downvote myself.
yes indeed. for a few months i didnt know what to do with it, and when i finally did, its so damn useful. doing downloading and plex on it with ample 5TB bandwidth (realistically doing ~800GB monthly). the storage disk is really fast and have very little buffering on direct play. really premium stuff.
Thank you very much everyone specially @uptime. I am going through all the providers right now.

Cheers!
